Science - Curiosity and Discovery
We are Scientists...
Science at St. John's is all about asking questions, exploring ideas and finding out how things work. We encourage children to be curious and to wonder about the world around them.
In lessons, pupils use their enquiry skills to investigate, predict what might happen, and test their ideas. They learn to work scientifically by observing carefully, recording results, and thinking about what those results mean.
Science isn’t just in the classroom - it’s everywhere! From the food we eat to the technology we use, science is part of everyday life. By bringing learning to life, we help children see how science connects to the real world and why it matters.
Our goal is to inspire young scientists who love exploring, questioning, and discovering new things. Every great invention started with a curious mind!
We Are Proud Members of the Ogden Trust Partnership!
Our school is delighted to be part of the Ogden Trust Partnership, a national programme that supports schools in making science - especially physics - exciting and accessible for all children.
The Ogden Trust works with schools to raise the profile of science and create opportunities for pupils to experience hands-on investigations. Through this partnership, we aim to inspire curiosity, build confidence in science and help every child see themselves as a scientist.
Being part of the Ogden Trust means we can access special resources, enrichment activities and even collaborate with other schools in the town to share ideas and celebrate science together. The Trust’s mission is simple: to make physics and science learning engaging and inclusive, so that every child has the chance to explore, question, and discover the world around them.
We look forward to bringing you updates on exciting science events and projects happening in our school thanks to this amazing partnership!
Budding Archaeologists!
Year 6 children enjoyed becoming archaeologists for the day! Through the Ogden Trust Project, Dig Deep Learning shared their expertise, knowledge and passion to provide our children with the opportunity to excavate an area of our school field. They couldn’t wait to get digging and find out what was beneath the surface! Liverpool John Moores University brought their geophysics equipment to analyse the physical properties of the soil - this allowed us to identify specific areas to excavate. What a wonderful day of curiosity!
We are Engineers of the Future!
Pola and Penny represented St. John's in our Ogden Trust Primary Engineer Competition. Children across the town came together to celebrate STEM in our primary schools; their invention designs were creative, innovative and inspiring. The judges were blown away with the variety and quality of the inventions. We are very proud of Penny who was chosen as the KS2 winner! Her 'Super Air Max 2025' invention aims to suck up all of the toxins and pollutants from the air in our local environment, filter and eradicate the pollution and pump out clean, fresh air so that we can live healthy lives.
In Autumn 1 Year 6 learnt about adaptation — how plants and animals change over time to survive in their environment. Adaptation is all about problem-solving in nature! For example, camels have humps to store fat for energy in the desert, and polar bears have thick fur to keep warm in the Arctic.
Through exciting activities, children have been asking questions, making predictions and using their enquiry skills to explore how living things cope with challenges like heat, cold, and finding food. We’ve linked this learning to real life by looking at how adaptation helps species thrive and why it’s important for survival.
