Shares Y3/4 Handball

Children from Y3/4 were chosen to take part in a Handball competition at Lathom High School.  The team showed some impressive skill levels, winning their first game 5-0.  They passed the ball really well and displayed some good tactical awareness. We narrowly missed out on a place in the semi-finals after a 3-2 loss in the final deciding group game but the children had an enjoyable evening of Handball. Well done team!

St John’s entered two teams for the Shares Basketball competition at Our Lady Queen of Peace High School.  18 teams competed and the small sized courts tested the skill levels of the children, but they played very well and displayed some outstanding ability. One of our teams narrowly missed out on a place in the semi-finals after winning 3 out of their 4 games.  All of the children involved were a credit to themselves and St John’s and they can be very proud of their efforts. Well done to our Basketball teams!

School Games Award – Gold!!

We've done it!

For the second year in a row, St John’s Catholic Primary School has achieved the School Games Mark Gold Award.

This is testament to the hard work of all staff members and most certainly the enthusiasm, passion and skill that the children have shown during PE lessons and when participating at inter-school sports events.

Let's continue this next year for an even better year of sports participation and performance!

School Games Awards Presentation

St John’s were invited by the West Lancashire Sports Partnership to an awards ceremony to collect our Gold award plaque for the School Games Mark.  Two children from Year 6, Leo and Grace, collected the award on behalf of our school.

Leo and Grace collected the award and proudly displayed it alongside British Athlete, Harry Coppell.  Harry competes in the Pole Vault for Great Britain and recently qualified for the World Athletics Championships in Doha.  He cruelly missed out after getting injured in the warm-up, but he is very close to qualifying for the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020.  Leo and Grace were delighted to meet a British athlete and hopefully our children will have the opportunity to meet Harry again soon…complete with Olympic medal! Best of luck to Harry and a massive thank you for inspiring our children!

Y5/6 Shares Football League

St John’s competed in the Shares football league at JMO over three weeks in September/October 2019.   22 teams from Skelmersdale and Up Holland competed across two leagues.

St John’s performed fantastically well in their league, playing some high-quality football and scoring plenty of goals on their way to finishing in the top 4.  This resulted in the boys competing in the Champions League, a cup competition featuring 8 of the strongest teams over the two leagues.

The team unfortunately lost 2-0 to the eventual winners Holland Moor in the quarter finals but we did beat St Teresas 1-0 before drawing 0-0 with Moorside which meant the boys finished in 6th position overall out 22 teams.  A fantastic effort. Well done team.

Boccia/New Age Kurling Competition

St John’s recently welcomed Hillside for a Boccia/Kurling festival.

Three teams from each school competed against each other in a variety of sports including Bowling, Boccia and Kurling.

Boccia is a target ball sport which tests muscle control and accuracy. It is similar to bowls with the aim of the game being to roll your ball closest to the target ball known as ‘the Jack’.

New Age Kurling is a form of the Winter Olympic Sport, Curling, and it is adapted so it can be played indoors or on smooth, flat surfaces rather than on ice. The aim of the game is to deliver the stones towards the target mat.

All of the children involved were fantastic. They gave 100% and displayed fantastic teamwork and sportsmanship. A fun afternoon with lots of points scored from both teams.

Well done to the St John’s Boccia/Kurling team!

Skelmersdale Schools Park Run

Skelmersdale Schools Park Run Team

St John’s selected a team of four children from lower KS2 to compete in the Y3/4 Schools Park Run competition.

The event took place near Nye Bevan Sports Centre. The set course was 1km in distance and our team had to complete the route in the fastest time possible. All of these times would then added together with the school scoring the lowest time crowned the winners.

All of the St John’s children completed the course in very respectable times. They displayed impressive levels of stamina and determination with lots of red faces and heavy breathing on view as they approached the finish line.  Physical activity at its best!

Well done to our team of runners!

The Skelmersdale Junior Park Run takes place every Sunday near Nye Bevan at 9am. Shares 3/4 Dodgeball Competitiion

St John’s recently took part in the Shares Y3/4 Dodgeball competition at West Lancashire College. We had two teams competing, consisting of children who attended our extra-curricular Dodgeball clubs.

Both teams competed to a very high standard. One team winning 4 out of 4 to qualify for the quarter finals as winners of group C. Our other team won 3 of their 4 games and qualified as group D runners up.  This resulted in an all St John’s quarter final match.

Both teams gave their all and the children really enjoyed the experience. Unfortunately only one team could progress and after a very close game, one team ran as out narrow winners and would go on to the semi-finals. With the extra support on the side line from our other team, the children won the game and went on to the final which we unfortunately lost to finish as the competition runners up.  A fantastic effort from both of our Dodgeball teams.

Well done to all of the children involved who represented St John’s impeccably.

Sky Try Rugby Festival

Some of the children at St John’s have recently been working with Leigh Centurions Rugby Club on a scheme aiming to get more children experiencing/playing Rugby.

After 3 coaching sessions learning the basic skills, we selected a group of children to represent St John’s in a Tag-Rugby festival. On a beautiful summer’s day, the children took part in 3 fixtures against other local schools. They did amazingly well, winning one and drawing two of the three fixtures whilst playing some brilliant Rugby.

The children really enjoyed the experience of taking part in a different sport and we hope to work with Leigh Centurions again next year.
