West Lancashire Sport Partnership Y3/4 Tri-Golf

St John’s took part in the Level 3 School Games Tri-Golf competition. The event was hosted by the West Lancashire Sport Partnership at Ashurst Beacon Golf course.

On a pleasantly warm evening, the team of 10 children from Y3/4 competed in 8 different golf games which tested both their long and short game. A variety of driving, chipping and putting was required to score as many points as possible on each activity.

The team displayed great ability and they managed to score a massive 386 points which secured a 4th place finish. A very enjoyable evening!

Well done to the St John’s Tri-Golf team!

After 4 weeks of Rugby League coaching in curriculum time from Leigh Centurions, a group of children from Y4 were selected to represent St John’s in a Rugby League Festival.

On a rainy afternoon at St Richard’s Primary School, our children put their new found skills to the test. They played four games against other teams, winning two, drawing one and losing one.

The St John’s children had a fantastic afternoon and really enjoyed experiencing a new sport in Rugby League. We look forward to next year’s festival!

*Any children in Y2/3/4 looking to experience Rugby can do so with Leigh Centurions now running a Rugby League club at Little Digmoor Primary School. This takes place every Wednesday during term time only from 4-5pm.

Skelmersdale Schools Park Run

Skelmersdale Schools Park Run Team

St John’s selected a team of four children from lower KS2 to compete in the Y3/4 Schools Park Run competition.

The event took place near Nye Bevan Sports Centre. The set course was 1km in distance and our team had to complete the route in the fastest time possible. All of these times would then added together with the school scoring the lowest time crowned the winners.

All of the St John’s children completed the course in very respectable times. They displayed impressive levels of stamina and determination with lots of red faces and heavy breathing on view as they approached the finish line.  Physical activity at its best!

Well done to our team of runners!

The Skelmersdale Junior Park Run takes place every Sunday near Nye Bevan at 9am. It’s a 2km course for juniors only (4-14 year olds) and children of all abilities are welcome to take part.  They can walk, jog or run the course at their own pace and its absolutely FREE of charge!! The children displayed some excellent sporting ability and they managed to win two out of the four games they played scoring 8 goals in total.

A fantastic effort, well done team!

Shares 3/4 Dodgeball Competitiion

St John’s recently took part in the Shares Y3/4 Dodgeball competition at West Lancashire College. We had two teams competing, consisting of children who attended our extra-curricular Dodgeball clubs.

Both teams competed to a very high standard. One team winning 4 out of 4 to qualify for the quarter finals as winners of group C. Our other team won 3 of their 4 games and qualified as group D runners up.  This resulted in an all St John’s quarter final match.

Both teams gave their all and the children really enjoyed the experience. Unfortunately only one team could progress and after a very close game, one team ran as out narrow winners and would go on to the semi-finals. With the extra support on the side line from our other team, the children won the game and went on to the final which we unfortunately lost to finish as the competition runners up.  A fantastic effort from both of our Dodgeball teams.

Well done to all of the children involved who represented St John’s impeccably.

The event was split into 4 groups, each containing 4 schools. The winning team from each group would then proceed to the semi-finals. St John’s competed in group B. The children played 3 group games, impressively winning all 3 to comfortably proceed to the next round.

They played fantastically well in the semi-final, winning in style to advance to the final. Unfortunately, despite taking a lead, the team were narrowly beaten to finish the competition as runners-up.  A fantastic effort from all of the children selected.  Well done to our Basketball stars.

Sky Try Rugby Festival

Some of the children at St John’s have recently been working with Leigh Centurions Rugby Club on a scheme aiming to get more children experiencing/playing Rugby.

After 3 coaching sessions learning the basic skills, we selected a group of children to represent St John’s in a Tag-Rugby festival. On a beautiful summer’s day, the children took part in 3 fixtures against other local schools. They did amazingly well, winning one and drawing two of the three fixtures whilst playing some brilliant Rugby.

The children really enjoyed the experience of taking part in a different sport and we hope to work with Leigh Centurions again next year.
