Welcome to Year 6

Welcome to Year 6!

Year 6 – Important Information

Maths/English homework is given out on a Friday, to be handed in the following Wednesday.

Homework club is on a Monday; children are expected to attend. A lesson input will be delivered at the start of homework club, children will then be expected to complete a piece of learning linked to the lesson objective. This will be classed as one of their homework pieces for the week. This will either be Maths or English based.

Children are expected to read for a minimum of 15 minutes every night. This time will increase to 20 minutes as we settle into Year 6. Reading books can be changed daily once children have read with an adult at home and the reading record has been signed. Please ensure the length of reading time and page numbers are noted down.

PE is on a Wednesday and Friday; please ensure full kits are in school. If children do not bring their kits in, then they will be placed in a different class to complete written learning.

Spellings will be given out on a Friday, children will be tested on the following Friday.

Children are expected to practise their spellings regularly.

Children are expected to practise their times tables on a regular basis and will be tested throughout the week. Year 6 are expected to be able to recall their times tables and related facts within 4 seconds. For example, understanding that 6 x 7 = 42, 7 x 6 = 42, 42 divided by 7 = 6, 42 divided by 6 = 7.

We are looking forward to watching each and every-one of you grow this year. Remember if you believe, you will achieve. The sky is the limit Year 6! It certainly is going to be an exciting adventure enabling you to gain all the valuable skills you need in preparation for high school. Let’s do this Year 6!

Science - Light

We have been learning all about shadows and how they are formed

We have been learning all about how light travels. We have learned scientific vocabulary and concepts using actions. This has enabled children to retain their understanding and learning

Geography

Developing our geographical and map skills to locate the 15 National Parks across the UK. We discussed what National Parks are and why they are described as 'breathing spaces'

Science

Science experiments to show how light travels in a straight line from a light source to an object, then reflected in a straight line to a mirror, the light is then reflected in a straight line to our eyes which enables us to see. Children had to make sure the ray of light was travelling in a straight line. Well done Year 6!

History

We have become true Historians and delved into the life of the famous women’s rights activist Emmeline Pankhurst. We have conducted research to find out who she was, what life was like during the late 1800’s, what she did, what kind of impact she had on society and if it was significant. Finally, we discussed how her actions and voice have affected the way we live our lives today. It has been so interesting! Year 6 have been creating their own power-points to present their findings.

Art influenced by musicians

We have been developing our artistic skills, gathering ideas, using a range of mediums, doodles and experimenting with designs in our art sketch books.
